Auto accidents (PIP or PAI Insurance)
If you own a car, you most likely have Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage (sometimes called
Personal Accident Insurance or PAI) as a part of your auto insurance policy. If you should have an
accident, and you are at fault, your insurance company will cover your medical costs (up to the amount
your policy provides for). Under these circumstances, Living Lotus Massage will bill your insurance
company for the Medical Massage treatment sessions we provide.
If the other driver was "at fault," the insurance coverage situation becomes a "third party coverage"
situation, where the "at fault" driver's insurance may or may not cover your medical expenses.
Living Lotus Massage does not bill the "at fault" driver's insurance company.
However, you can request that your insurance company cover your Medical Massage expenses and negotiate with the "at
fault" driver's insurance company for reimbursement - a fairly common practice. If your insurance company will
cover your medical expenses under these circumstances, we will bill your auto insurance company for your payments.
If your insurance company will not do this for you, you'll need to pay for services at the time of treatment
and seek reimbursement through either your's or the "at fault" driver's insurance company.
Auto accidents can cause these conditions:
- whiplash
- neck and back injuries
- tendon damage
- muscle spasms
- myofascial pain
- headaches
- migraines
- secondary muscle group pain ("guarding")
- insomnia (pain can interrupt sleep)
These and other accident-related injury conditions can be effectively treated with Medical Massage.
In order to receive Medical Massage for these conditions you will need:
- a prescription from a physican, naturopathic physican or chiropractor
- the prescription must include a diagnosis code (or codes) that we need for billing
- a claim number from your auto insurance company
- the name of the claims representative from your auto insurance company who is handling your claim
Auto accident claims can be complicated, depending on a number of factors. If you have questions, feel free
to contact us. We'll do our best to help, and point you to additional information sources if necessary.

Medical Conditions (Medical Insurance)
At one time or another you may experience challenges with your health. If your physican,
naturopathic physician or chiropractor diagnoses you with a condition and prescribes massage as part of your
treatment plan, you may be eligible to use your health insurance. Depending on your coverage
you may still be required to pay an office visit copay. Living Lotus Massage is considered a
Preferred Provider
for a number of health insurance companies and plans.
Your physican may prescribe Medical Massage as part of your treatment plan for these (and other) medical
conditions:
- recovery from surgeries
- tendonitis
- sprains (ligaments) or strains (muscles/tendons)
- trigger points
- osteoarthritis
- repetitive strain injuries
- athletic injuries
- sciatic pain ("false" sciatica due to pinched nerve)
- fibromyalgia or fibrositis
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- thoracic outlet syndrome
- temporomandibular joint dysfunction
- swelling or edema
- insomnia
- anxiety
- emotional stress
These and other conditions can be effectively treated with Medical Massage, depending on your physican's
diagnosis and prescription. In order to receive Medical Massage for health conditions covered through
your health insurance, you will need:
- a prescription from a medical physican, naturopathic physican or chiropractor
- the prescription must include a diagnosis code (or codes) that we need for billing
Your health insurance company may require that your Medical Massage be approved as "medically necessary"
before it will be covered. Also, you'll want to know if you've exhausted the number of
Medical Massage visits allowed by your plan. You are responsible to pay in full for massage
services we provide which are not covered by your health plan.

Massage can help you recover more quickly and completely from workplace
related injuries. Ask your doctor about alternative care therapies, such as massage.

Workplace injuries (Labor & Industries - L & I)
If you are injured at work and need treatment:
- Go to the emergency room or doctor of your choice and say you were injured at work.
The doctor will file the workers’ compensation claim for you. If your claim is accepted,
workers' compensation (L&I) pays for medical care directly related to your accident.
- The doctor can recommend any further treatment you may need. This is done on the accident
report form, which you (and the physician who treats you) will fill out. You must have the
signature of a medical doctor or an Advanced Registered Nurse Practioner (ARNP).
Your claim is filed when your doctor sends this report to L&I for processing.
- L&I can approve your claim if your doctor certifies that you were injured at a specific
time and place at work, or have an occupational disease. Benefits cover medical bills and may
include other types of assistance.
- Claims can be rejected if the doctor cannot certify the worker's medical condition is
related to something specific that happened at work or an occupational disease. This legal
standard frequently requires the L&I claim manager to collect background information about
the worker's accident and the worker's medical and job history.
- Some injured workers miss days of work while they recover. However, many can return to
work gradually, while still receiving medical benefits. Research shows that the sooner you
are able to return to work, the better your chances are for recovering your income and health
- Claims are closed when:
- Your doctor or another physician certifies that further treatment will not improve your condition, or
- L&I has no information showing you need further treatment, or
- Your injury was minor and treatment was successful.
In these cases, L&I accepts and closes your claim at the same time, in a single Notice of Decision.
These steps for seeking care when injured at work can be found on the
Washington State Department of Labor and Industries web site.
